Guide
How many pavers do I need?
Count the pavers from their size and joint, then the sand and the base under them.
The pavers
- Area of one paver with its joint: (length + joint) × (width + joint).
- Pavers = patio area ÷ that area.
- Add 5 % for cuts at the edges, more for a curved or diagonal pattern, and round up.
Example
A patio of 12 × 16 ft is 192 sq ft. With 4 × 8 in pavers and a ⅛ in joint, each paver takes 0.233 sq ft: 825 pavers, 867 with 5 % for cuts.
Under the pavers
- Bedding sand, 1 in: 16.8 cu ft with the 5 %, about 34 bags of 50 lb.
- Joint sand: a few bags, about 4 here.
- Crushed stone base, 6 in: 3.56 cu yd, counted to size.
With Landscaping Calc
A pavers zone gives the pavers, bedding sand, joint sand and base at once, from the paver size and depths you set. See Paver calculator.
